The Portico Guide lists eighteen hotels in four categories and describes each of them as a building. This page sets out where the material comes from, what was left out on purpose and how to tell us that something is wrong. Nothing on the site is judged against anything else.
Four categories were fixed first, then hotels were found to fill them: buildings of snow and ice, four Canadian resorts, six houses where the fabric or a collection carries the entry, and four addresses built around a compact berth. Nothing was chosen because it is popular, and nothing was left out because it is not.
Each entry rests on the hotel's own published pages, on mapping services for the address and the surroundings, and on published writing about the building. Where a statement could not be confirmed in one of those, it was rewritten until it could stand without it, or dropped. Dates and years appear only where a source gives them.
There are no prices, no star classes, no counts of rooms, no reviews and no booking links. Hotels are not compared with one another and none is put above another. The licensed floors of the resorts in the casino section are not described. Nothing on the site is a promise about weather, access or availability.
Buildings of snow and ice are seasonal. They are raised again from new each winter and are gone by spring, so a description of one year is a description of that year only. Glass igloos and glass cabins are heated buildings on the same ground, not rooms of ice. Exact opening dates are set by each operator and should be confirmed with the hotel.
